Explorer Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

The zombie run at the prison was £50 a head (!) and over 16 only! That didn't seem like good value, so we thought we could do better ourselves... We will meet at the hut and plan our own zombie defence! Bring head torch and camera equipment (aka phone?) and we will see what we can do...

Check the facebook chat for the new gate code...

Drum Corps Dress Rehearsal.........

Drum Corps will now have a dress rehearsal for the Sunday Parade at Baschurch Church, 11.00 on Saturday.  Apologies for the short notice.

Wednesday, 4 November 2015

Remembrance Parade

This Sunday (8th November) Boreatton Scout Group including the attached Explorer sub-unit will assemble in the Admiral Duncan car park at 10.15 AM.  We will march behind our Drum Corps and the Royal British Legion to All Saints Church where we will take part in the Remembrance Sunday service.  We will be finished at around 12.00.

This is a very solemn occasion, where you show respect for the killed and injured in war and conflict, and this is only one of two occasions where your Leaders expect you to make every effort to attend, (the other being the St Georges Day parade).

Full ironed uniform please with school trousers or skirt, and polished school shoes.
Please wear a poppy with pride and bring some money for the collection.

Glorious!

Celebrating the dawn of parliamentary democracy through the demise of the traitors in 1605 but also the dawn of the  Glorious Revolution and the invasion of England the same day 1688.

We will meet at the usual times 8:00-9:30 but at Leaton Hall where we can burn the traitors in effigy, launch rockets, and eat a celebratory sausage with the rest of the district explorers (well from Rae Valley at least!)

Bake off!

Oh dear - I was watching bake off instead of updating the blog... (sad face)

It is DofE reunion night which is a joint night with Rae Valley (Adrian from Rae Valley is our usual assessor...)
We will welcome Rae Valley explorers to the hut, finally deliver our expedition aims to Adrian (the Music Video and Fungus Findings from recent expeditions) and generally reminisce about what went well or woefully to help those that follow...
I have suggested, in keeping with the finale to bakeoff, that we bake our favourite Great British DofE Bronze bake meals -

I will bring a few bits and some stoves and fuel but please bring some food that you would like to 'cook and tell' and we will sit round an alter fire and reminisce about expeditions past, beneath the stars...

Realised I never got round to uploading anything from our Mongolian expedition...

...lets do it all again! (except in Nepal obviously)

Kathmandu!

We've been talking about exploring in Nepal, ever since we had the Everest talk a while ago - if we are going to go we need to start fundraising now and start making plans!

The outline plan is to combine some volunteering at an orphanage which has been 'adopted' by our Asiapacific coordinator and his West Lancs scouts.

Experience Kathmandu and Nepal of course!

And do some trekking in the mountains. This would ideally take about 3 weeks and ideally be over the winter period (to get nice clear weather). Volunteering at the orphanage over Christmas would be pretty fun too... However, school hols are quite short so we may have to try and ask for a couple of days out of school or compromise on how much we do.
Image result for nepal mountain views

We could do an elephant safari in Chitwan national park too if anyone particularly wants to be with elephants...

The alternative would be to go after many of you have left school - July - and have three weeks to do everything, but it would be wetter and so we would probably not be trekking in the Everest area. I've heard different stories about how nice/pretty/refreshing/wet/muddy... the monsoon is, but Asiapacific said groups that had gone at this time had enjoyed themselves, but had less good views of the high mountains (more like Richard's mountain walks then, I guess!)

Finally, we could go for the last three weeks of the summer hols - much the same comments as the previous option but flights probably a bit more expensive and less convenient for me at work. There are festivals in Kathmandu in Aug/Sept so that could be livelier!

The explorers set a price of £500 per explorer so leaving quite a bit of fundraising to do so we need everyone to be committed to joining in! (leaders pay full cost though)

Budgets for our last big trip worked out OK with a £300 price and a £2300 cost, the balance being met by voluntary contributions and about £1000 per head raised in the fundraising. I am expecting the cost to work out at about £2000 for this too, so the same approach should work!

I propose to hold an interest meeting at the hut on Thursday 1 October. After the drop hike for explorers (as soon as they make it back to the hut (if you get lost and don't get back to the hut, it is prob not a good idea to go exploring further afield!) and parents from 9:00 to 9:30pm.

Perfect practice makes perfect!

It's the next w/e practice this Saturday 26 Sept (because Sunday is a busy day!) with scouts at 10:00-11:30 and explorers 12:00-13:30 ('cos explorers aren't as good at getting up in a morning!)
Please bring the fees too if you haven't already! (I've had to pay your entry already, which is the main part of the camp cost).

Here is the permission for for the practices and please bring you completed Guest Day form (or take the blank one if you didn't last week).

Navigation training

Aha! Ive finally got on the blog!

So just to add to Alans post earlier, please bring the following with you:

Clothing to go outdoors around PGL
Headtorch
Compass (if you have one as we only have a limited supply)

See you tomorrow!

Watch this spot!

The Boreatton Explorer Sub-unit prog sub-committee have sorted a draft prog for you! Coming soon!

Meanwhile, after somewhat expansive navigation that entertained and kept the leaders busy during recent DofE expeditions, we have decided we need to step up the nav training....

Luke has a rigorous training plan that we will launch tomorrow, so bring a head torch I expect (and actually given the last DofE expedition's navigation, maybe a bivvy and a few night rations just in case!)

See you at the hut tomorrow usual time, usual place etc!

uh oh - these explorers didn't bring head torches for their night nav exercise - now they've got into deep water...

Tonight!

Yes - its Autumn already! We meet as usual (?) for our traditional first meeting of term - planning! (kind of like 'back to basics' but more mature and explorer led).
See you all soon!
(Hope you like the autumnal music, and play 'Spot the ageing explorer from when they were dids!' )

Pandy Rocks!

A chance to return to your DofE camp!
I need to know numbers asap as other groups are wanting to come to this... there are only 5 or 6 free places left!

SHROPSHIRE BORDERS SCOUT MOUNTAINEERING GROUP
All scouts are invited to the Climbing Day at Pandy Rock, Glyn Ceiriog. You need to book a place BEFORE Thursday 17th September.
Meet at Shottaton Crossroads at 09-45 (later than normal for regular SBSMG Scouts), return approx 17-45
Bring, boots or trainers for climbing, waterproofs. All other gear will be provided.
You also need a packed lunch, snacks and a drink.

Autumn Rifles

Its Autumn! Those who signed up for the rifle squad need to get ready for the National Rifle Championships and make sure our shooting is sharp!

I propose to hold w/e practices with the first this Saturday 19 Sept (because Sunday is climbing day!) with scouts at 10:00-11:30 and explorers 12:00-13:30 ('cos explorers aren't as good at getting up in a morning!)
Please bring the fees too! (I've had to pay your entry already, which is the main part of the camp cost).
See you on Saturday!

Oh no, its the end of term.....................

and this is our last meeting till September :( so lets make it an interesting one!!

You will need;
A Supersoaker
A bigger Supersoaker
A change of clothes and a towel (no surprise there then!!!)
Water bombs
A big hug for Luke who is going off to the Japan Jamboree very soon
A stonking great big water pistol

See you on Thursday...........

Going to the top! (of Wales that is...)!

Thought I'd just copy this from the scout blog as Pete has put all the info up! If you want to join me on the top - fb message me or text my mobile or ...

This is your chance to climb the BIGGEST mountain in England & Wales; Mount Snowdon. It's suitable for all scouts, though it's a long day. Please contact Alan as soon as possible. We'll meet at the Old Enigma at Shottaton Crossroads at 8-45am and return about 7pm. (We'll phone if times change, as soon as we can get a signal)!!!
You'll need the following kit;
Walking Boots,
Ruck Sack,
Waterproof Coat & Trousers,
Spare clothes,
Hat (that covers your ears) & gloves,
Small personal first aid kit,
Packed lunch, drinks, snacks.
If you haven't got it, contact Alan as he has lots of spare stuff. DON'T turn up without it.

Actually, I think a hat that shades your ears would be more comfortable, but it may well be wet and windy (and cold) on the top! Also we should be encouraged to take compass and whistle...

Boreatton Rifles

It's time to sort out the squad! I need to enter the team this week so there is a short deadline - sorry!
The camp is 16-18 October and will cost £65 same as last year and I need you to commit to some practice before we go (it can count as a DofE skill!).
Here are the tickets (if you particularly want to enter any specific disciplines in addition to the main event - let me know). It is worth booking a reserve place as those who shot well and have reserved places have (at least in one case) booked a normal ticket so first reserves are likely to be able to come...

upd8 4 meeting 2moz

'cos Biz likes my cool text speak :)

ha ha lol!

So there is no meeting planned for tomorrow 2 July as you are all either going on the DofE expeditions or to the Pedalcar camp... except, I need to talk to the DofE group about:

1 - the risks and advisability of using field boundaries as rights of way... (!!! Grrr.... what have I told you about route planning Grrr Grrr Grrr!!!) and,

2 - check your packed kit in your rucksack - please bring it so we can make sure you are prepared to enjoy your expedition!

Also, the second DofE group might want to come and listen (and learn!)

Finally, as the take up for the pedalcar camp was rather limited, if you want to come and get your weekly fix of hanging out with scouty friends, you are of course welcome to come along, but I will be focussing attention on the w/e DofE group.

Oh, and here's the consent form for the expedition for the DofE group!

Tuesday, 30 June 2015

Friday 10th July Baschurch Village Hall 6 till 8 for the group BBQ
Sunday 12th July 12.00 West Felton Village Carnival

Kit night

Kit night tomorrow! If you are going on the DofE (or even if you arent!) and have any questions about your kit, why not bring it along and discuss with an expert? Also, to provide a bit of a break, we will taste test some cheap and some expensive expedition food. Bring your prefered DofE meal ingredients and we will see which is best! Your food or the bought expedition food.

Thursday, 18 June 2015

Tonight

There is no explorer's meeting in the prog, but that was because we were going to Drayton Manor... As that is put back, and as the new DofE group NEED TO PLAN THEIR ROUTE we will meet at the usual time and place.
I'm afraid we do not have anything planned for the others so perhaps chance to get that cup of tea we didn't get round to last meeting and think about what we will contribute to the group BBQ in a couple of weeks time? We had fun on the hike trying Scout Jenga so perhaps we could explore similar themed games?
Also - Biz would like to get a firm date for Drayton Manor as each time we propose a date lots of you can't make it :(

Sunday, 14 June 2015

Efficient process

Just enough - just in time - it's the future of manufacturing but we were there first with our prog planning!
Sorry there is not much notice but we have had to postpone the island survival night and bring forward climbing, so we meet on Thursday 21 May at 8:30pm-9:30pm at Oswestry Climbing Centre
I'll make the blog prettier and add a pic later but hope to see you there!
Please bring a letter with emergency contact info by way of consent form - I'll put an official one up later but so long as it has a parental signature and contact/medical info it will be fine

Ah! Here's the pretty stuff!
A consent form and a pic of us doing it a year or so ago... Hmmm... he's just lying around amongst the lumpy things on the floor (those are trip hazards those are! Better update my risk assessment!)

Shooting opportunity

It's the start of the SBSMG mountain season so I hope lots of you will be with me in the hills on Sunday, but if you are not, there's an opportunity to visit Ellesmere College and meet Tom Rylands - their shooting coach. He's also the Wales target shooting development officer and keen to help us and promote shooting in N Shrops (he is helping coach Charlie in Air rifle and also .22 rifle shooting).

You have to register for their open day at www.ellesmere.com for the day and go along 1-4pm. They'll try and enrol you if you're not careful, but just tell them you have no money and want to see Tom and have a go at the target shooting!

Tom has also offered to let us go along to one of his sessions later this term when we start training the squad for Bisley so if you can't make it on Sunday, we'll probably go and visit later in the term, but if you are keen to join our rifle squad or do target shooting for DofE then it's a good opportunity to try shooting in a different (maybe better?) range than Leaton Hall Barn!
